Brand identity in similar products

jose vanders

Looking at the real artist that performed the song we are using for our music video, she is what we want to create with our ''artist'' in which we will be producing a digi- pack and album cover which a brand identity already created.

The artist Jose Vanders is a normal down-to-earth girl. She writes her own music, performs her own music and distributes it herself- she is very hands-on and very authentic and raw within the music industry.

With her relatable image she tends to attract young teenagers within the age bracket of 13-25 and mostly females. Therefore this is who my group are going to target within our own project, we want to create an artist that is relatable, likeable and a 'girl next door'.

With her genre of music it is light-hearted and has a fun vibe to it, meaning that she could branch out to further audiences as her overall sound could be described as mainstream, which therefore gives her a huge potential audience to target.

A similar artist to Jose, would be Kate Nash. She also writes and performs her own songs, Kate has a huge following and fan base showing that there is a market for that type of artist. Her debut single, 'foundations', went in the charts at number 2, proving how popular and mass marketing these artists can be.

During a visit to Jose Vanders website, we looked through her forum to see who the dedicated fans are, they are infact as we thought predominately female. Although there are a number of males within the group aswell, it is the female gender that populate the site. With the male fans also this proves how her appeal is general and for everyone.

Jose is an artist that has truly taking advantage of the online revolution, this is probably due to her age, as she is teenager and has grown up in the culture of youtube, myspace and facebook (which is where she posts her music) which has enabled her reach out to young fans. Jose uses these networking sites to as a method of promoting her music.

Location

The story behind the lyrics are nothing more than a girl within a station observing all the people she sees on the platform.

Our initial idea was we need to feature a station at somepoint throughout the video, as we cannot ignore the obvious links made within the lyrics.
However, using the inside of a station would pose problems for this, as we would have to consider train staff, commuters and background noise- which on a bad day could be horrific.

We then came to the decision that we should have our 'actor' (posing as artist) to e standing simply outside the station for a fraction of time, to simply state the station's presence but if outside we are not interferring with the maintenance and daily tribulations of a station.

When commenting on the different people throughout the song ' woman with a baby' etc.. We have decided that we will provide these characters ourselves (actors) and have them positioned on a street within a town centre. The ''artist'' will be walking casually commenting on the people she witnesses.

We feel that with the correct camera angles and editing this video will be simple yet effective.

We have decided that it would be a better decision to shoot some scenes around our school purely for the advantage of time management. We had taken some test shots outside to make sure the picture quality is not grainy or anything that will affect the overall appearance of our music video.

Storyboard (Plan and Final Copies) **

We made draft storyboards in which we found useful to initially grasp the concept we were trying to show. We found it an effective way to organise our thoughts.

Camerawork and Editing **

When coming up with initial ideas for our video i had to analyse the lyrics and see what would fit within the genre of the song and the artist.
I decided that it would be narrative based as the song is very self explanitory, with the lyrics describing different people she comes into contact with at a station.

There is metaphoric meaning behind most of the lyrics, but have decided to portray them literally to give the video a quirky ironic edge. There is a line for example. which states 'boy who has lost his marbles' in which we are going to show a boy literally dropping a bag of marbles.

Will be shot at train station, as this links directly to the lyrics

After listening to the beat of the song, we have decided to have the claps within the melody at the beginning and throughout the song to flash black like you are blinking when the song claps. This relates to the content of the song being the people the artist sees, and with the motion of blinking it is as if you are observing with her.
This will also amplify the visuals.

Shot as through artists point of view, dont see her face.

With the line; 'theres a boy with a smile thinking about marie, coz he caught her in the shower last night accidentally' I envisioned a shot of a bubble coming out of the boy actors head, with an image placed into it of video footage of a girl in a shower.

In certain shots we want to have lots of zoom-ins so it is like the viewers are zooming into her mind.

' A woman with a baby trying to make it stop
crying so shes bribing it with a lemon lollypop'

We thought about having a real -life Mother and baby but with the famous phrase " never work with children or animals we decided that it would be easier to fit more camera angles into a shot where it was just the artist with a lemon lollypop so it stays to our literal theme but also moves the video along progressively.

'You think if i could choose to live here at the station i would?'

Everytime we have a shot where it is at the train station, we will bring the shot to where out artist is standing against the wall at a station. As with all the action that occurs throughout the video, it is important there is a central position throughout the video, to enable a clear view of the music.

With all the other verses within the song, we are going to portray our artist walking down the street and we will use the idea that the audience are walking alongside her, so we are taking the audience along on our journey.

We Will end our video with a slow zoom-in of our artists face singing against the wall,as the will start the video identical to the end- adding symmetry to our video will add depths of meaning to our video as musical compositions are symmetrical and we want to show the audience how talented musically our artist is.

Digipacks and Adverts (Auxillary Task) Planning **

My group has started preperation into looking how to promote our artist and their album once the music video is complete.
We will be working on a digi-pack and then an advert for the digi pack.
I have decided the album is to be titled 'Faces going places' as is the Song for thechosen music video project. I recognised there needs to be a clear link between the video and the album, so they can promote each other. I will complete this by using an image captured whilst filming the music video, to appear on the front cover of the album, so the audience can recognise the link and therefore recognise the artist.

On the back of the Digi-Pack I have decided on a play on the words of track listing. As the theme within the music video will be stations and train related, as the lyrics within the song describe out artist's sightings at a train station.

Also we have decided to take a digital camera along with us when filming our music video to capture scenes from the video and images of the artist at the same time. This will enable continuity with any props or costume the artist will be wearing in the video, as we feel the most effective cover of our digipack would be if the image was taken from the video as a link for the audience to make.

ALBUM COVER

I have looked for inspiration through similar artists to see what would look best for the album cover promoting our own artist. I started looking at young british singer Diana Vickers. There was recently an image of the artist leaning up against a tree casually which I believed would be suitable for our own artist also.

To enable continuity throughout my project, the album cover would feature the same outfit as a scene from the music video, and as there are alot of shots of our artist placed u against a wall singing- i thought that the tree pose would be ideal.

Through experimentation through different fonts and different colours, it seemed that to make the artist stand out she would need to be the brightest aspect of the colour. So using the layering technique we made the background black and white and kept her in colour.

jose_album_idea_2

To reflect her identity as a fresh and quirky artist I feel the font in which the album title and artist name are enscripted highlights these personality traits of Jose. With the contrasting colours it would definitely catch a consumer/listeners eye.

We have decided on a particular idea for our own artist using the jose vanders concept as a basis.

We will use our actress/performer to appear in these shots, and we will use a better quality camera to ensure that the picture that will appear on the album cover and the advert.

Monday 22nd November
We started making prototypes of our digipack in order to speed up the process once the filming is complete. Whilst printing off a digipack template we were thinking of a theme that could be used within the digipack cover, and as our artist is a young female artist- the best way to market her would be as a friendly, personable girl.
We decided that polaroid pictures would take the theme of the album, as we would feature personal pictures of our 'artist' to enable the audience to understand that she is a fun, likable person, and the kind of person you wish you were friends with.

When drawing up the template we have decided that to use an image from the shooting of the video would be a good idea, as there would be recognition from the audience and a link created between the video and the new album.
