The ways in which our media project uses, develops or challenges forms of real media products.....
One aspect of our music video that we used after analysing many music videos, was the headshot in which the camera is still and focused on the artist's face whilst they lip-sync. One female artist who uses this within her video is Britney Spears in 'Hit me baby' where she performs infront on lockers, whereas our artist is placed infront of a wall. This is a common aspect in a music video as it is important that the audience clearly see the artist's face to enable recognition to occur to promote future performances.
Another shot that is similar to other artists is switching between artist's close-up and switching to a seperate scene with match-on-action. Madonna's videos are particularly well-crafted as she contrasts action and performance into her music videos. In one scene we see Madonna singing, then we see dancers performing in another scene, where it switches back and forward. We used this in our own music video as i think it adds layers and dimensions to enable the audience to find it entertaining.
MADONNA VIDEO
The entire concept of our video is narrative based, and goes along smoothly with the lyrics of my music video. Which after hours of planning finally paid off, meaning that when the audience are watching the videos they are almost being told a story with pictures. I believe this gives the video a charming effect that audiences will find easy and pleasurable to watch.
"The boy whos lost his marbles, found them down a drain"
"Theres a woman with a baby trying to make it stop, crying so shes bribing with a lemon lollypop"
Whereas an artist like Lady GaGa her videos are more performance based and are not directly linked to her video. As in her video for 'Bad Romance' she dances throughout but it doesnt link to a bad romance in anyway.
Using a similar aspect to Madonna yet again, was the shots we used throughout the video where our artist is walking towards the camera lip-syncing. I felt this gives the video a laid back feel and is an effective way of keeping the video moving smoothly. In Madonna's video for her video 'Don't tell me' the entire video is her walking whilst lip-syncing towards the camera, which has a similar relaxed feel that our video was aiming for.
How effective is the combination between my main product and ancillary texts
What have I learned from my audience feedback?
The most important aspect of our project is to ensure that the audience feedback was positive. As the relationship between the audience and our video and ancillary tasks are what would sell the product in reality. An artist is nothing without fans.
Questions that were asked were:-
What are your impressions after watching our music video? Was it successful?
Do you feel the style of music suited the song?
Was there wide enough variety of camera shots and angles? If not, which would you suggest could be used/ used more?
What do you think is most in/effective about the editing?
Do you think it follows the conventions of a music video?
Please give 2 good points about our music video?
Can you suggest any improvements?
I placed key words selected from the audience feedback into a programme called Wordle which creates word clouds in which I will evaluate the feedback which was entirely positive. I decided to make seperate word clouds to deepen the evaluation made on each feedback sheet.
The main aspect we wanted to include within the video was variety. When watching a music video the vital part is that the audience are kept interested throughout the entirety of the song. Within this feedback the member commented on good lip synching which again, creates a believable concept for the video which is helpful when using an actress as the artist.
Same ideas used within this feedback, believable and relatable were key words as when creating the music video, my group and I were conscious the entire time of creating a realistic video with a realistic artist, as if we had bad lip synching and poor camera shots it would look amateur.
This particular member of the audience commented on our editing, which was very satisfying as this was a aspct of the project which took the most time and effort in order for the entire video to flow smoothly and reach our high standards. Having the lyrics match the storyline was also commented on, which was done purposefully as the song has a child-friendly theme surrounding it, and we wanted to take the fictional characters within the lyrics and re-create them on screen.
All areas within this feedback was ideal, even using 'very successful' when describing their impression of the video. We spent alot of time re-filming shots that we felt could have been improved, and finding some extras to appear within the video which in itself was a hard task, but after finding co-operative actors we found the rest of our camera angles and shots came naturally. After our project last year, when we filmed this time around I felt alot more confident in the working of the camera in order to create the desired angles and shots.
Transitions was another area we found effective when completing our editing, as in order for the entire video to flow there was transitions needed. Using the Mac computers to use trial and error with different effects, but we knew in order to keep the theme of the video continious we needed it to be simple shot to shot movements, as the narrative speaks for itself.
The shots were commented on alot through the audience feedback, during the filming process we were filming through snow, rain and wind which made enabling effective shots to be filmed was testing. With perseverance and patience we filmed what we could on each day and prayed for a calm day which eventually came, and that is how we enabled a variety of shots to be filmed accurately and smoothly. Being smooth was important as we didnt want the idea of hand-held camera being a feature of the music video at all.
This particular audience member commented on the dropping of marbles scene, which thanks to editing was made far more interesting to watch than it was initially. We took many shots of the marbles dropping as we played with the idea of filming from a birds eye shots, but decided a medium long face on shot would be much more effective as it proved to be.
How did I use the media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stage?
As a project it is extremely important that we perfect the album cover and the advert, as in reality this is a marketing strategy. This is the opportunity for us to grab the audience's attention with an attractive front cover mixed with a persuasive advert, We took a longer than expected to plan the ancillary as we were keeping our target audience in mind the entire time. As a group we wanted Jose to relate to young girls of 17-early 30's, so we had to find a colour scheme and image that would keep the relationship between the audience and artist taut.
Album
We started looking around Photo Plus in order to find an effective image for the front cover of our CD cover. We had many different versions, but we felt in order for our artist to compete against existing ones we needed to create an album cover that was striking. As when looking at our previous album cover the font, colours and images we felt were too old-fashioned for our target audience of 16-30.
We did some research into some young and fresh artists of today and used the concepts used on their albums to adapt them onto our artist, as we needed to see how the artists were positioned on the cover in relation to the information surrounding them.
looking at new artist Ellie Goulding, she had a close up image of her face, which my group and I decided looks more sophisticated rather than a further away image. As we want the audience to recognise her image.
After being satisfied with our end image we used our time after this to create an effective back part of the cover, which would include tracklisting. We used a similar idea to Eminem's album, which features our artist walking away. This looks relaxed and melancholy on our album just like the genre of the music that our artist produces.
Advert
We then as a group decided what we wanted on the advert for our album, advert creation started with a basic idea that was drawn out within my group on paper which displayed the concept that we wanted to project into our audience
We knew what image we wanted to feature, and thought of quotes we could use to enable our advert to look as authentic and realistic as possible.
Then using Photo Plus we created a very simular copy of what would be our advert. Using a neutral colour scheme was intentional as to create a constant image for our artist we want 'Jose' to be seen a a genuine artist of natural beauty.
I will be focusing on the instrumental areas of songs, to see how they blend in with the rest of the music video. Thinking of solo female artists was key as this reflects our artist the best.
Lily Allen- The Fear
In this particular music video when there is a part of the song that is instrumental it shows a progression into the next scene of the video, it moves smoothly into the next area of the video.
This may fit with the idea of our video as ours is story based like the video for 'The Fear', and would fit with the smooth transitions we have in place.
It was proving difficult to find songs with long instrumental silences I found a music video with lots of spaces filled with purely music, which fitted my groups problem
Hilary Duff- Stranger
To fill the spaces, the artist has chosen close-ups of herself singing to continue a smooth flow in a medium long shot. I find this technique intriguing.
We still need to decide how to fill the instrumental parts of the song, I will be researching other music videos in order to see how professional artists use the spaces within their songs.
During the course of trying to create a strong image for our artist we used inspiration from credited artists.
MUSIC VIDEO
During the filming me and my group tried to capture many different shots of the artist when she was lip-synching the song. During the chorus we had the concept that our artist would be standing by a wall, which is a common convention of a music video as we saw through examples we had analysed. Artist, Eliza Doolitte featured this idea during her video of 'Pack Up'
We chose this video in particular as the concept was similar to our own, as we have a variety of locations throughout the video but the chorus was to remain the centre of the video and to be featured in the same location throughout.
DIGIPACK
Me and my group found an image of young female artist, Diana Vickers which caught our attention and we felt it would fit with the idea we had for our own Album cover. The image we thought displayed a strong female image which is what we wanted to capture with jose vanders when it came to marketing- as we felt the music that Jose produces is easy-listening and not over produced music therefore it seems sensible to give our artist a raw organic feel to symbolise her music.
We did not copy Diana's image but instead used to basic idea and adapted it to fit what we wanted to emulate with our artist instead. Below is the image we finished with.
The idea we created for the back of our digipack is similiar to the idea that Eminem also used for the front cover of his debut album 'Recovery'. This again re-instates a strong figure and shows power, in which we wanted to show our artist with female empowerment. We will use this image, as on the right hand side where there is a clear space we can superimpose a tracklisting which will look professional. The image also links in with our music video, as the setting in which the photo was taken features the location that is shown alot throughout the video. This creates coherence and furthers the branding of Jose Vanders.
