I will be focusing on the instrumental areas of songs, to see how they blend in with the rest of the music video. Thinking of solo female artists was key as this reflects our artist the best.
Lily Allen- The Fear
In this particular music video when there is a part of the song that is instrumental it shows a progression into the next scene of the video, it moves smoothly into the next area of the video.
This may fit with the idea of our video as ours is story based like the video for 'The Fear', and would fit with the smooth transitions we have in place.
It was proving difficult to find songs with long instrumental silences
I found a music video with lots of spaces filled with purely music, which fitted my groups problem
Hilary Duff- Stranger
To fill the spaces, the artist has chosen close-ups of herself singing to continue a smooth flow in a medium long shot. I find this technique intriguing.

First edited cut of music video
We still need to decide how to fill the instrumental parts of the song, I will be researching other music videos in order to see how professional artists use the spaces within their songs.

The linking of intertextuality
During the course of trying to create a strong image for our artist we used inspiration from credited artists.
MUSIC VIDEO
During the filming me and my group tried to capture many different shots of the artist when she was lip-synching the song. During the chorus we had the concept that our artist would be standing by a wall, which is a common convention of a music video as we saw through examples we had analysed.
Artist, Eliza Doolitte featured this idea during her video of 'Pack Up'

We chose this video in particular as the concept was similar to our own, as we have a variety of locations throughout the video but the chorus was to remain the centre of the video and to be featured in the same location throughout.
DIGIPACK
Me and my group found an image of young female artist, Diana Vickers which caught our attention and we felt it would fit with the idea we had for our own Album cover. The image we thought displayed a strong female image which is what we wanted to capture with jose vanders when it came to marketing- as we felt the music that Jose produces is easy-listening and not over produced music therefore it seems sensible to give our artist a raw organic feel to symbolise her music.

We did not copy Diana's image but instead used to basic idea and adapted it to fit what we wanted to emulate with our artist instead. Below is the image we finished with.

The idea we created for the back of our digipack is similiar to the idea that Eminem also used for the front cover of his debut album 'Recovery'. This again re-instates a strong figure and shows power, in which we wanted to show our artist with female empowerment. We will use this image, as on the right hand side where there is a clear space we can superimpose a tracklisting which will look professional. The image also links in with our music video, as the setting in which the photo was taken features the location that is shown alot throughout the video. This creates coherence and furthers the branding of Jose Vanders.

Digipack Development
Digipack Editing
When deciding on the idea of our digipack, me and my group decided we wanted a polaroid effect for the front cover of our artist's album. Polaroids are trendy and personal, which is how we want to market our artist.
The skill to editing the picture for a professional look is to use photobucket, where within this you find the 'border' option where you can find a Polaroid effect with a decorative border.

Re-shooting
With the ever-changing British weather, me and my group decided that for the best continuity within our music video we would need to re-film some key scenes, to enable the lighting and background to remain constant.
I took some images of our re-shooting, which resulted in some very useful footage as we saw through editing.

Adaptations to shooting schedule
As a group we initially planned to start filming on Monday 15th November, however due to our actress being ill, we have had to re-schedule.
As a result of lost time for filming, we decided to continue with the planning process and start our ancillary task ideas, as we like to be organized and know what we are creating.
We have decided to reschedule shooting to 22nd November instead in order to catch-up with lost time.
Due to poor weather conditions throughout the entire day, my group and I decided that it would not be worthwhile idea to film on this day.
Our initial plan to shoot on the Monday 22nd November was also cancelled as we had major technical difficulties.
We spent our lesson producing a 3-D digipack, in which we created a prototype of what ours will ideally look like.
However, we are have planned to resume our filming schedule on Friday 26th November, as we have an entire day to film due to an inset day meaning we will catch-up on lost time.

Brand identity in similar products

Looking at the real artist that performed the song we are using for our music video, she is what we want to create with our ''artist'' in which we will be producing a digi- pack and album cover which a brand identity already created.
The artist Jose Vanders is a normal down-to-earth girl. She writes her own music, performs her own music and distributes it herself- she is very hands-on and very authentic and raw within the music industry.
With her relatable image she tends to attract young teenagers within the age bracket of 13-25 and mostly females. Therefore this is who my group are going to target within our own project, we want to create an artist that is relatable, likeable and a 'girl next door'.
With her genre of music it is light-hearted and has a fun vibe to it, meaning that she could branch out to further audiences as her overall sound could be described as mainstream, which therefore gives her a huge potential audience to target.
A similar artist to Jose, would be Kate Nash. She also writes and performs her own songs, Kate has a huge following and fan base showing that there is a market for that type of artist. Her debut single, 'foundations', went in the charts at number 2, proving how popular and mass marketing these artists can be.
Kate NashDuring a visit to Jose Vanders website, we looked through her forum to see who the dedicated fans are, they are infact as we thought predominately female. Although there are a number of males within the group aswell, it is the female gender that populate the site. With the male fans also this proves how her appeal is general and for everyone.

Jose is an artist that has truly taking advantage of the online revolution, this is probably due to her age, as she is teenager and has grown up in the culture of youtube, myspace and facebook (which is where she posts her music) which has enabled her reach out to young fans. Jose uses these networking sites to as a method of promoting her music.
Location
The story behind the lyrics are nothing more than a girl within a station observing all the people she sees on the platform.
Our initial idea was we need to feature a station at somepoint throughout the video, as we cannot ignore the obvious links made within the lyrics.
However, using the inside of a station would pose problems for this, as we would have to consider train staff, commuters and background noise- which on a bad day could be horrific.
We then came to the decision that we should have our 'actor' (posing as artist) to e standing simply outside the station for a fraction of time, to simply state the station's presence but if outside we are not interferring with the maintenance and daily tribulations of a station.
When commenting on the different people throughout the song ' woman with a baby' etc.. We have decided that we will provide these characters ourselves (actors) and have them positioned on a street within a town centre. The ''artist'' will be walking casually commenting on the people she witnesses.
We feel that with the correct camera angles and editing this video will be simple yet effective.
We have decided that it would be a better decision to shoot some scenes around our school purely for the advantage of time management. We had taken some test shots outside to make sure the picture quality is not grainy or anything that will affect the overall appearance of our music video.

Storyboard (Plan and Final Copies) **
Camerawork and Editing **
When coming up with initial ideas for our video i had to analyse the lyrics and see what would fit within the genre of the song and the artist.
I decided that it would be narrative based as the song is very self explanitory, with the lyrics describing different people she comes into contact with at a station.
There is metaphoric meaning behind most of the lyrics, but have decided to portray them literally to give the video a quirky ironic edge. There is a line for example. which states 'boy who has lost his marbles' in which we are going to show a boy literally dropping a bag of marbles.
Will be shot at train station, as this links directly to the lyrics
After listening to the beat of the song, we have decided to have the claps within the melody at the beginning and throughout the song to flash black like you are blinking when the song claps. This relates to the content of the song being the people the artist sees, and with the motion of blinking it is as if you are observing with her.
This will also amplify the visuals.
Shot as through artists point of view, dont see her face.
With the line; 'theres a boy with a smile thinking about marie, coz he caught her in the shower last night accidentally' I envisioned a shot of a bubble coming out of the boy actors head, with an image placed into it of video footage of a girl in a shower.
In certain shots we want to have lots of zoom-ins so it is like the viewers are zooming into her mind.
' A woman with a baby trying to make it stop
crying so shes bribing it with a lemon lollypop'
We thought about having a real -life Mother and baby but with the famous phrase " never work with children or animals we decided that it would be easier to fit more camera angles into a shot where it was just the artist with a lemon lollypop so it stays to our literal theme but also moves the video along progressively.
'You think if i could choose to live here at the station i would?'
Everytime we have a shot where it is at the train station, we will bring the shot to where out artist is standing against the wall at a station. As with all the action that occurs throughout the video, it is important there is a central position throughout the video, to enable a clear view of the music.
With all the other verses within the song, we are going to portray our artist walking down the street and we will use the idea that the audience are walking alongside her, so we are taking the audience along on our journey.
We Will end our video with a slow zoom-in of our artists face singing against the wall,as the will start the video identical to the end- adding symmetry to our video will add depths of meaning to our video as musical compositions are symmetrical and we want to show the audience how talented musically our artist is.

Digipacks and Adverts (Auxillary Task) Planning **
My group has started preperation into looking how to promote our artist and their album once the music video is complete.
We will be working on a digi-pack and then an advert for the digi pack.
I have decided the album is to be titled 'Faces going places' as is the Song for thechosen music video project. I recognised there needs to be a clear link between the video and the album, so they can promote each other. I will complete this by using an image captured whilst filming the music video, to appear on the front cover of the album, so the audience can recognise the link and therefore recognise the artist.
On the back of the Digi-Pack I have decided on a play on the words of track listing. As the theme within the music video will be stations and train related, as the lyrics within the song describe out artist's sightings at a train station.
Also we have decided to take a digital camera along with us when filming our music video to capture scenes from the video and images of the artist at the same time. This will enable continuity with any props or costume the artist will be wearing in the video, as we feel the most effective cover of our digipack would be if the image was taken from the video as a link for the audience to make.
ALBUM COVER
I have looked for inspiration through similar artists to see what would look best for the album cover promoting our own artist. I started looking at young british singer Diana Vickers. There was recently an image of the artist leaning up against a tree casually which I believed would be suitable for our own artist also.
To enable continuity throughout my project, the album cover would feature the same outfit as a scene from the music video, and as there are alot of shots of our artist placed u against a wall singing- i thought that the tree pose would be ideal.

Through experimentation through different fonts and different colours, it seemed that to make the artist stand out she would need to be the brightest aspect of the colour. So using the layering technique we made the background black and white and kept her in colour.

To reflect her identity as a fresh and quirky artist I feel the font in which the album title and artist name are enscripted highlights these personality traits of Jose. With the contrasting colours it would definitely catch a consumer/listeners eye.
We have decided on a particular idea for our own artist using the jose vanders concept as a basis.

We will use our actress/performer to appear in these shots, and we will use a better quality camera to ensure that the picture that will appear on the album cover and the advert.
Monday 22nd November
We started making prototypes of our digipack in order to speed up the process once the filming is complete. Whilst printing off a digipack template we were thinking of a theme that could be used within the digipack cover, and as our artist is a young female artist- the best way to market her would be as a friendly, personable girl.
We decided that polaroid pictures would take the theme of the album, as we would feature personal pictures of our 'artist' to enable the audience to understand that she is a fun, likable person, and the kind of person you wish you were friends with.
When drawing up the template we have decided that to use an image from the shooting of the video would be a good idea, as there would be recognition from the audience and a link created between the video and the new album.

Lyrics and Ideas for Music Video **
Faces going places lyrics
There's so many people at the station
Waiting for a train to
Take them on some long journey far, far away
There's a boy with a smile
Thinking about Marie
Cuz he caught her in the shower last night, accidentally
He caught her in the shower last night, accidentally
There's a woman with a baby
Trying to make it stop crying
So she's bribing it with another lollipop
There's a girl with a boyfriend
She's in way too far cuz
I saw him looking at another woman's heart
I saw him looking at another woman's heart
And people say that I'm just being lazy
I've got the dreams but don't know where to go
I think if I could choose to live here at the station I would
There's a man with a bald patch
At the back of his head
His heart is getting sleepy
And he's watching where he treads
A group stretch of girls are standing in a line
Naivete exploding as he gives them all the eye
Naivete exploding as he gives them all the eye
The lady with the basket
Full of all her eggs
She's counted them too quickly
She'll wake up and they'll be dead
The boy who's lost his marbles
Has found them down the drain
The slit's too thin to get them so he'll have to start again
The slit's too thin to get them so he'll have to start again
And people say that I'm just being lazy
I've got the dreams but don't know where to go
I think if I could choose to live here at the station
To live here at the station
Oh, I think if I could choose to live here at the station
I would
With the theme of this song being about a train station, we thought it would be suitable to have the setting of this video at our local train station.
Our Pitch
We had to collect all our ideas in order to deliver them to our peers. Our pitch we presented included genre, pace, branding and amplify just to name a few.
We discussed how due to the contents of the lyrics, we thought filming within a station would be suiting for the music video, our peers thought this would also be a good idea. The pace will be of a melancholy mood as the rhythm of the song is laid-back, so we want the pace to reflect this aswell. Being a female vocalist on the track we thought the branding should show her being simular to those who are within her target audience ( expected ages to range from 14-30) we feel that making her relatable will be the strongest branding. A 'girl next door' esque situation. Of course our pitch only involves the beginning stages of our planning process, and our ideas and plans are evolving all the time.
Further Planning
When planning our music video, we began to think that the possibility of doing all our filming within a train station would be time consuming for our group and the train station aswell. We came up with the idea that some scenes would be shot in the station such as close-up vocals of the person role-playing the artist, then other scenes that we will use will be around our school and around our local area. Therefore the opportunity to film a large majority of the video outside means we can film any time of day, which will result in a much better quality music video.

MUSIC VIDEO TASK Planning **
We had to decide as a group what type of band we wanted for our music video. The first hurdle we had to cross though was to find someone that was easily contactable, and is preferably from nearby- so we can ask for permission to use their song within our music video. I found an artist that my group had mentioned seeing at a local music festival that took place this year, Jose Vanders. Her songs were catchy with colourful lyrics that created ideas for music videos. I found a certain song which sparked ideas called 'Faces going places', I then e-mailed the artist as her personal e-mail was posted on her official myspace page. She confirmed the use of her song.

This is Jose Vanders, our chosen artist
I started thinking of aspects that made a good music video which were :-
1. Relationship between music and visuals
2. Editing matches the pace
3. Iconography is established (e.g live performance= Rock)
4. Close-ups of the artist
5. Variety of shot types/ Camera angles
6. Reference to voyeurism
7. Artist has own image developed
Within my project im also having to prepare a digi pack, which to my understanding is a CD/DVD package with detailed packaging. To support this we have to create an advert to advertise our product. Looking at a few examples there are some interesting examples around which gave me some inspirational ideas.
The usual way a record label promote a new release is:-
1. Advertising (whether it be TV, Magazine or on a billboard)
2. Artist does promotion ( TV shows, small gigs or radio)
3. Use it intertexually through synergy ( within an advert- song used for product)
4. Gigs before an album release ( could also perform 'exclusive' song for the fan from new album)
Looking at example album advertisements we kept these questions in mind:-
1. Relationship between advert and other products?
2.Analysing a choice of image/font/colour and effects
3. Layout and page design
4. Desirable and eye-catching- how?
5. Does the design suggest genre? Iconography shown?
6. Are they developing an image?
7. Any use of industry information such as a release date?
The Vines- Best Of

1. There is a hippy theme involving plants and nature, which relates to 'The Vines' as a band name. This can also be taken as a representation for their music, which is always evolving and growing like Vines.
2. Font of the band's name is a logo and shows continiuty in regards to changing the album cover, but keeping the band logo constant. This helps the relation between fans and the band.
3.The colour chosen is shown to be green, this represents an organic, raw, natural influence that is shown through their music. Showing the fans that they are natural artists with authenticity.
4. The design for the cover is eyecatching. The colour and design draws the eye to look into the album cover more, which could be beneficial as it may draw new listeners into being more curious about the band and what it has to offer.
5. There is alot of industry information, as their record label is clearly recognised within the front cover of their album. To regards with when it is available and shows that it is available in different forms of media including download, that is clearly stated so their are no misunderstandings. With 'Hit Singles' used also, this is to persuad readers this is a successful band with a huge following therefore you should buy this album.

PART 7 Narrative/Audience/Genre Theory
GOODWIN'S THEORY
The most famous theory has to be Goodwin's theory he believes there a certain features within a music video that remains constant throughout, such as:-
+ There is a relationship between the music and the visuals.
The visuals amplify, illiminate and contradict the music and that editing matches the pace and tempo of the music.
+ Particular music genre may have their own video style (e.g live performance tends to match with the Rock genre video)
+ Demand on the part of the record company for lots of close-ups of the artist.
this enables that the artist can create a form of iconography ie. lady GaGa uses here obscene image to her advantage
+ Reference to Voyeurism ( the please of looking at something that you are not involved in) which can involve the treatment of women, terms of systems of looking 9screens within screens and multiple different images)
+ Intertextual references- other music or films/tv
Intertextuality
When a text references another text.
E.g Blink 182 replicated britney spears in one of their videos for All The Small
Things

The use of a band using the image of a popular singer in their video, immediately draw media attention from viewers. They will notice the link and will remember the video for the image, and the song for the video. In some cases the video for a song is more famous than the song itself.
Iconography
Indie- live performances, to give the feeling of authentic music and a genuine passion for the music
e.g- Kings of Leon fall under the genre of indie and in their video 'Sex on Fire' they continue to creat a video that fits the stereotypical genre. A scene in their video centres around them performing.

The dark colour scheme helps with the dark nature of the band to help create an images for them. This creates a link with the rock genre to this band and starts an image the fans can recognise.
Pop- Choreography with bright colours and usually has a storyline structured in the video to entertain the audience.
E.g- Britney Spears' video for 'oops i did it again' involves all the colours, storyline and choreography. A clever marketing idea came through when she wore a bright red latex catsuit which provided iconography for Britney, her record label and her fans.

This conveys a link made between the rec catsuit and the artist, which is clever marketing as if anyone were to ever see one again, they would automatically think of Britney Spears.
R'N'B- Scantily clad women, suggestive dance routines and excessive boasting of wealth (jewellery, cars, houses etc.)
E.g- 50 cent's video for candy shop includes all of the above sterotypical ingredients of a R'N'B video. As two images below show 50 cent sitting on an incredibly expensive car, in expensive clothing infront of a mansion.

then the second image shows the scantily clad women dancing around, which includes voyeurism as men viewers will feel that the women are dancing for their pleasure.

This is very typical for a rapper, as they like to flaunt their wealth and women in anyway possible. The image that comes along with this gains respect from male listeners who want that lifestyle and from women who want to marry a man from that wealth and power.

PART 6 Websites
I also took some time to analyse different band websites, to see what conventions they used to attract the audience to look further into the website. The main conventions of a promotional website are usually music videos of the artist, large image of the artist, a clear name of the artist, different homepages for fans to access and most likely a stream of events and updates on the artist for their performances and products.

PART 5 CD cover designs
The most effective way of attracting consumers to CD's is the front cover of the CD. In order to understand the technique artist's are currently using, i looked at 5 different CD album covers.
1. Russell Watson- Encore
2. Destiny's Child- Destiny Fufilled
3. Alicia Keys- As i am
4. Enrique Iglesias- Euphoria
5. McFly- Room on the 3rd floor

This analysis enabled me to understand what needs to be placed on the front of a CD cover so it reaches out to the right audience and gives the audience the right impression. This will help when doing the auxillary task in which we have to make our own digi-pack, as i will be able to look at what similar artists have done successfully and recieve inspiration from them.
